Dental appliances are widely used in dentistry and orthodontics and play a crucial role in achieving the desired outcomes of your treatment plan. They include night guards to protect your teeth from bruxism, retainers to keep your teeth aligned after orthodontic treatment, and sports mouth guards to protect your teeth from the effects of a physical impact.
Night Guards
If you are experiencing severe pain and discomfort in your jaw, it may be caused by bruxism. Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, can often occur at night. Many patients are unaware of the problem, which may only come to light when they start experiencing jaw pain or your dentist identifies signs of wear and tear on the teeth. In such cases, your dentist may recommend a night guard to protect your teeth from damage.
Retainers
Orthodontics are commonly used to straighten crooked and misaligned teeth. After treatment, your dentist may recommend wearing either a plastic or metal retainer to keep your teeth permanently aligned. Unlike metal braces that are permanently fitted on the teeth or clear plastic aligners that must be worn throughout the day, retainers can only be worn at night.
